The fate of Winchcombe Abbey after the Dissolution of the Monasteries paralleled that of Cirencester.
An evening lecture with David Aldred Thursday 27th June 7 – 8.30pm The fate of Winchcombe Abbey after the Dissolution of the Monasteries paralleled that of Cirencester. Both abbeys were large town centre institutions with an adjacent parish church which were left redundant as places of worship, and consequently the abbeys have both largely disappeared from the landscape. This talk will show how the Influence of the abbey can still be found in the landscape, and how fragments of carved stone can help us to understand its grandeur. David Aldred is a retired school teacher who writes and lectures on North Gloucestershire. He has worked with Professor Christopher Dyer on some of Winchcombe Abbey’s Cotswold estates. Cost: £5.65 adult or £5.00 for season ticket holders. Advanced booking is recommended. Contact details: Corinium Museum, Park Street, Cirencester, Gloucestershire, GL7 2BX Tel: 01285 655611
